How currency rates in Iraq are worked out
There is no deep market for the euro or the lira in Baghdad; money changers price the dollar and everything else derives from it. So each currency's dollar rate comes from a daily global source and is multiplied by the parallel-market dollar rate to give the dinar figure. It is a conversion estimate, not a list price at any one changer, who add a margin that varies by currency and amount.
The official column uses the Central Bank of Iraq rate (1,310 dinars per dollar) and applies to official bank transactions only. The gap between the two columns is the dollar gap itself.
